july 26, 2017 admin leave a comment social media now has been one of the most powerful media for political campaign and also a media to protest law terms or other government decision. politicians, celebrities, and other people gather into one space called social media and they sound what they want to say about their ideas, opinion and feelings toward everything that happens in their surroundings. this thing also applies in sri lanka; however what is interesting is that the current president sirisena has a lot less twitter followers and twits than rajapaksa. you would expect the current officials to twit more about the current events and have a stronger connection. rajapaksa is using twitter as an alternative channel and is more aware of the power of social media. or this is his main outlet as the other publications are more focused on president sirisena. here are interesting statistics: twitter followers (as of july 2017): president sirisena : 153k rajapaksa : 259k donald trump : 35m twits (as of july 2017): president sirisena: 1,700 rajapaksa: 4,600 donald trump: 35,000 looking at sri lanka, it appears that president sirisena is lagging in terms of social media. it is to be seen how this will be reflected in the next elections in 2020. also, the twitter main picture in president sirisena’s profile is a dam, a building structure vs. rajapaksa’s picture of people. also rajapaksa is holding q&a sessions on twitter and answering any questions including corruption allegations of his government. he is definitely building up the social media management experience. now, let’s compare sri lanka to the usa. united states population is 15 times that of sri lanka (300m vs. 20m). president trump’s followers are 230 times that of president sirisena (35m vs. 0.15m). this statistic shows how far ahead united states is in terms of social media compared to sri lanka. digital marketing, social media , google, search engine optimization are all more developed in the us; but this means sri lanka internet, search and social media usage will only grow in the coming years. however, president trump has said that social media was responsible for his win in the elections against all odds, so the message is president sirisena could improve his usage, connect more with his people and at least get as good as rajapaksa in terms of social media engagement before the next elections. elections seo social media sri lanka uncategorized 2015 sri lankan parliamentary elections march 16, 2017 admin leave a comment sri lanka had its 15 th parliamentary election on august 17 th 2015 to select 225 members. united national party (unp) led coalition united national front for good governance (unfgg) won 106 seats, and formed a national government with the help of some members of united people’s freedom alliance (upfa) the main result of the election was that after unexpectedly losing presidential elections to a former colleague, maithripala sirisena, in the beginning of 2015, sri lankan’s most controversial politician mahinda rajapaksa lost a second time, this time in parliamentary elections to prime minister ranil wickremesinghe, leader of the unfgg and unp. mahinda’s plans of comeback as the prime minister failed. mahinda was accused of building an authoritarian and oppressive regime and abusing his power – charges he denies. some sinhalese buddhists and minorities, mostly tamils and muslims, favored mr. wickremesinghe over mahinda rajapaksa. what did change / is going to change as a result of this election? sri lankan people have new hope that ethnic strife between sinhalese majority and the tamils will be resolved more reforms in economy expected after corruption and bad economic policies of the previous government unp is pro-western and centre-right; sri lanka expected to be more integrated and in better relations with the us and other western powers as opposed to being closer to china now that the 2015 elections are over, let’s look at all the parliamentary election results for unp over the years and determine interesting facts and questions to shed some light to politics in sri lanka. if we were to summarize why government control moves from one party to another, we can list 3 key factors in sri lanka politics that are extremely important: gaining the support and trust of majority sinhalese community – if a political leader or a party fails to do this, they will not be chosen, period. economic instability – if inflation is high or there is economic depression, current party is held responsible and the ruling party will change in the next election abuse of power – if a leader or party abuses power, oppresses an ethnic group or is just corrupt, people of sri lanka will want a new person or party eventually. this might take time; but eventually it happens. now let’s look at some data in more detail and deep dive on elections of 1956, 1977 and 2015 when fortunes of unp significantly changed. unp had the least number of parliamentary seats in 1956, having only 8 seats out of 95 available, down from 54 four years ago. what happened in 1956? lost its prime minister senanayake unexpectedly in a riding accident. his son and nephew tried to replace him; but were not ready for the job growing dissatisfaction with unp due to its support of minorities, especially catholics. unp lost the support of majority buddhist sinhalese sri lanka freedom party (slfp) was formed before 1956 elections as an alternative and a middle-ground between unp and marxist parties. this filled a void and resonated with the sri lankan people. this was the first time there was a real alternative to unp. unp had the biggest gain in number of seats in 1977 with 123 more seats than previous election and also achieved the most number of seats in its history with 83% of parliamentary seats. what was the trigger for such a dramatic change in sri lanka? r. jayewardene of unp emerged as a leader and started re-organizing the party. growing dissatisfaction with the economy due to united front policies and unp’s promise of significant free food to each person in sri lanka . jayewardene supported free trade and opened up the economy to the world. marxist jvp 1971 revolt and mishandlings by the existing government. jvp became mainstream later and formed united people’s freedom alliance (upfa) with slfp 2015 was the biggest gain in seats since 1977. what was the main factor in this historic victory? unifying message: strong need for a unifying message and reconciliation and a lasting peace. sri lankans were tired to divisive politics. going forward, strong and credible government will do more to maintain unity than a corrupt and dubious one. it’s personal: mahinda rajapaksa failed to gain the full trust of sinhalese community due to corruption and ongoing murder allegations. sri lankans wanted to give a clear message that his time was up. vote of confidence for sirisena – belief that sirisena will follow through on his promised reforms and finally bring peacetime, and the island’s wartime past will be a ‘distant’ past what do you think? what is the most important think that the sri lankan government should focus on? news, finance and politics site important articles how to find the best credit repair service interior design services search for: proudly powered by wordpress
